Nutella Aphrodisiac Puffs

The chocolate hazelnut spread has been sitting in my pantry, patiently waiting for that one night I sneak into the kitchen armed with a spoon, and the Jaws theme song in the background. Plus, quite a few people have asked for more Nutella recipes. I happened to have some puff pastry in my freezer, and the rest of the ingredients just happened to be aphrodisiacs (strawberries, chocolate, and almonds), so they're Nutella Aprho-Puffs. Okay maybe not, let's try Nutella Aphrodisiac Puffs. Much better. They're simple to assemble and are ready in no time. Strawberries can be replaced by raspberries, and the almonds for hazelnuts. They don't necessarily have to be squares either, use whatever cookie cutter design your heart desires. Just remember to create a border with extra puff pastry dough to hold in the spread. Enjoy!

Nutella Aphrodisiac Puffs

Ingredients:

Puff Pastry Dough                  1 Sheet, thawed
Nutella                                    1 jar any size
Strawberries                            4 thin sliced
Almonds                                 1/2 cup chopped
Egg                                         1
Water                                      1/2 tblspn
Flour                                       Enough to lightly flour dough working surface

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
2. Roll out dough onto a lightly floured surface, and cut into squares or desired shape. Make sure to leave enough left over to create borders.
3. Mix egg and water, then brush the edges of dough squares with egg wash.
4. Cut thin strips of dough and gently press into squares to create borders and lightly brush egg wash over strips.

5. Scoop less than a tablespoon of Nutella onto the inside of squares and spread evenly, place on sheet tray and bake for 10 minutes.
6.  Remove from oven and sprinkle chopped nuts. Let cool for about ten minutes then add strawberry slices as desired.

  2. I loved this post! This recipe uses the nutella so creatively and elegantly. I feel a little embarrassed that I never thought outside of simply eating nutella off a spoon. I look forward to more recipes!

  19. Thanks so much for the wonderful comments everyone!
@Cherrey, puff pastry is a pain in the butt to make. I would have to do an entire blog on just explaining how to prepare it. It's not difficult, but a tedious process. I am attaching a link to a video I found on youtube on how to make puffy pastry. Hope it helps!

@Kimberli- You can make these the night before, but puff pastry has a lot of butter in it so the texture will be almost chalky, definitely not the same as fresh out of the oven, it's at its peak puffiness because the steam from the butter is what makes the dough rise. But this recipe is very quick to make, I would suggest having the dough cut in the shapes you want the night before, and dallop the nutella and bake right before serving, They take 15 mins in a 400 degree oven. Sprinkle chopped nuts and fruit and you're good to go! =]
